At the opening of the 236th academic year of the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest, ABCD member professor Sándor Belák was inaugurated as Doctor honoris causa. Congratulations!
Prof. Sándor Belák is a board member of the ABCD and President of the European Society of Veterinary Virology (ESVV)
Sándor Belák is one of the world’s leading researchers in veterinary virology. Based on his novel inputs in molecular genetics and on his well-focused and convincing research activities both at national and international levels, he has developed groundbreaking new methods, supporting the control of infectious diseases of domestic animals. These activities resulted that Sweden today is a very important player in the associated fields of both animal and public health, areas which are extremely important for the agricultural sector both in the EU and at a global scale. Sándor Belák has received his education in the frame of the prominent classical virology traditions in Hungary, then conducted research in the USA, as well as in the Foot-and-Mouth Disease research programs of the FAO and moved to Sweden in 1985.

Prof. Sándor Belák, member of the ABCD and President of the European Society of Veterinary Virology (ESVV) was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry “for his outstanding research work in veterinary virology”.
The gold medal was presented to Prof. S. Belák by Royalty Carl XVI Gustaf, the King of Sweden on the 199th anniversary meeting of the Royal Academy, held in Stockholm on the 28th of January 2012.
